CIT Leadership Program

One of the main goals at our teen surf camp has always been to create opportunities for leadership and personal development. In 2004 we launched our Counselor in Training (CIT) program. Being selected as a CIT has become more and more competitive through the years, and quite an honor if selected.

The girls’ responsibilities as a CIT include two important camp roles. They are a “cabin mama” for the 5 campers in their cabin. Additionally, they are a “beach captain” that assists their assigned surf instructor with loading and unloading the surfboards, and providing encouragement and coaching to the girls in their surf pods. It’s a big job as the CITs are on both during the day and night with the campers but feedback from past CITs is that the position helped build their confidence and gain important leadership skills.

Former campers who meet the following criteria may apply:

  • Must be 18-24 on the first day of camp
  • Must have previously attended a Maui Surfer Girls camp program
  • Preference given to those that have attended as a Teen Camper but Women’s Campers are welcome to apply also
  • Preference given to applicants with at least one year of college experience
  • Must be 1st Aid & CPR Certified before CIT program begins

The application period is currently closed.

Email [email protected] for any questions on our CIT Program.

“I wanted to thank you for providing the campers with such an incredible experience. My daughter has spent the past 24 hours recounting all the amazing adventures and moments she experienced at camp. I loved that the program pushed her out of her comfort zone while also providing a loving and nurturing environment for the girls. She’s already looking forward to next summer.” (2024)

“I just wanted to say what a fantastic time my daughter had at MSG camp!!!!  She is typically a pretty happy go lucky kid and we talk a lot, but sometimes getting the details from her is like pulling teeth.  When I picked her up from the airport last night she was effervescent!  Bursting with joy and happiness!!!  She couldn’t wait to tell me every detail of camp and gushed about how much she loved it and can’t wait for next year!!!!!  You are an amazing group of human beings and we feel incredibly lucky to have found you!” (2024)

“Thank you all for your awesome influence on my girl, these girls, and the amazing women they are heading toward becoming. I just know she is going to be sharing this meaningful experience with all her loved ones for months to come!” (2024)

“I learned alot about myself and channeled a greater love for surfing” (2024)

“Easily one of the best experiences of my life” (2024)

“I made so many memories that will last a lifetime” (2024)

“Loved the sisterhood” (2024)

Surf Camp FAQs

  • Can I attend if I don’t have any surf experience?

Yes! We specialize in first timers and beginners. Maui Surfer Girls overnight surf camp is the perfect place to learn and build your basic surf skills. If you already have surf skills, we will place you in an intermediate-advanced surf group so you can improve your skills with a professional surf coach.

  • Can I bring my own surfboard?

Absolutely! Just know that your personal board is your personal responsibility (unpacking from & repacking for travel, assembling & removing fin, waxing, etc). We also have a quiver of boards to choose from so you’re welcome to surf our equipment as well.

  • Where do we fly into and will someone pick up me up at the airport?

Yes, we will have an airport transfer to our camp free of charge. A representative from Maui Surfer Girls will greet you at the baggage claim area of Kahului (OGG) airport. FOR TEEN CAMPERS: Please notify us on the paperwork if you are an unaccompanied minor. We will make sure our camp representative is present at the arrival gate.

  • Is there a camp nurse?

Yes, we do have a camp nurse present for our Teen Camp. The medical information section on the registration is vital to fill out thoroughly so we can address any medical needs of our teen campers.

For Women’s Camp: Staff members can tend to basic first aid needs.

  • Do you accommodate dietary needs and allergies?

Yes, our camp cooks are excellent and aware of food allergies and needs. Please specify when filling out your registration form what your food allergies and dietary needs are and we are happy to accommodate your needs. *In 2025, Dairy and/or Gluten Free options will be a $75 upgrade (for Teen Camp) or $50 upgrade (for Women’s Camp) due to the rising costs of specialty food products.

  • What is your facility like?

We have a great oceanfront facility! Camp Olowalu is open to the public, but our particular ‘cabin’ area is directly on the beach, and reserved just for our use! Camp features oceanfront A-frame cabins with twin-size beds & memory foam toppers and shared bathrooms (which are reserved only for our camp use). There are 4 private toilets and two private showers plus one open-air outdoor shower. We also have our own kitchen and mess hall with lots of room to spread out or come together! Check out Camp Olowalu online!

  • What’s your refund policy?

2025 Payment and Cancellation Policies –
    • The tuition deposit + taxes & registration fee will reserve your enrollment at camp.
    • We accept VISA, MC, AMEX, Discover. If you need to pay via another method, please email us before registering at [email protected]
    • We charge a $200 processing fee on all cancellations (except in the instance that we, Maui Surfer Girls, have to cancel due to situations beyond our control).
    • ALL CAMP SESSIONS WILL NEED TO BE PAID IN FULL 90 DAYS PRIOR TO YOUR CAMP START DATE. The final payment is automatically charged to the same card that the deposit was paid with, 90 days prior to camp.
    • Tuition will NOT be pro-rated if the camper must arrive after our opening day or leave before our closing day.
    • The registration deposit is PARTIALLY REFUNDABLE (deposit minus the $200 processing fee) up to 90 days prior to your camp start date. Within 90 days of the camp start, your deposit becomes non-refundable except for instances listed in the medical/non-medical emergencies listed below.
    • The final payment is NON-REFUNDABLE except for instances listed in the medical/non-medical emergencies listed below.
    • In the unfortunate event of a medical emergency causing the camper to cancel attendance within 90 days of camp start, we will need a doctor’s note to honor any refunds. This refund will be determined on a case by case basis depending on how many staff hours were put in to fill your spot from waitlist or marketing efforts. If we are able to fill the spot, you will receive a partial refund (minus $200 processing fee, service fees + marketing costs). If we are unable to fill your spot, you will receive a 50% refund IF a doctor’s note has been received. If no doctor’s note has been received, no refund will be issued.
    • For non-medical emergencies within 90 days of camp start date, partial refunds will only be issued if we are able to fill your spot. This refund will be determined on a case by case basis depending on how many staff hours were put in to fill your spot from waitlist or marketing efforts. If we are able to fill the spot, you will receive a partial refund (minus $200 processing fee, service fees + marketing costs). If we are unable to fill your spot, no refund will be issued.
    • Any non-refundable amount due to cancellation can be issued as a non-refundable credit towards a future camp in the form of a promo code.

  • Can I use my cell phone to take photos and listen to music?

At our teen girl camps, we have a Technology Disconnect Policy. We collect all phones, etc that connect to the internet on opening day. They will be returned on designated Phone Days and again on Closing Day. Please bring a digital camera/GoPro for photo documentation. iPods that don’t connect to the internet are recommended if the campers want to listen to music, podcasts, etc. Women are encouraged to ‘disconnect’ for a bit of the camp, but you are all adults and will be treated as such!

  • How do the travel arrangements to camp work?

Please view Teen or Women’s camp pages and click on the ‘Prepare for the trip’ tab.

  • Can I send care packages?

Due to the length of camp and possibility of delayed delivery, care packages are no longer allowed. If you need to mail medical supplies, etc, please contact [email protected]

  • What are the driving directions?

Driving from Kahului/OGG ~ Follow the highway signs towards Lahaina. After the “Pali” (cliff) section of the highway start watching the mile markers. A “Camp Olowalu” sign is past mile 14, near milemarker 15 and directly across from “Olowalu General Store” and Leoda’s Pie Shop (Mountainside of Hwy). Turn left or oceanside off of highway at the “Camp Olowalu” sign. Make an immediate left and follow signs on road to “Camp Olowalu”. Parking lot is across from our A-frame cabins.

  • Can my 12 year old attend Teen Camp?

Due to changes in our camp programming, our minimum age is now 13.

  • Women's Camp: Does all-inclusive include tips?

Please bring extra cash for tips for your Massage Therapist ($20-30), Camp staff (including Surf Coaches & Caterers – $120+) and for various guided activities.

  • How many campers attend each session?

Our Teen Camp has a limit of 20 campers plus 4 CIT’s. Our Women’s Camp has a limit of 12 campers.

  • How many campers are in each cabin?

Our Teen Camp has 6 people (5 teen campers plus 1 CIT) per cabin. Our Women’s Camp has 3 people per cabin.

  • What is the typical age of campers?

Our Teen camp age limit is 13-17 and we typically get a good amount of campers of each age within that range. Teen campers are bunked with similar ages in each cabin so we won’t have 13 year olds bunking with 17 year olds. Our Women’s campers age limit is 18+ but most of our campers are typically in the 25-65 age range.

  • Do most campers come solo or are they traveling with family/friends?

For both our teen and women campers, most travel to camp alone but find that they quickly make new friends and the group comes to feel like one big family. Occasionally, we get family and friends who attend together. We offer a “bring a buddy” discount, email [email protected] to inquire about that option.
