Congratulations on finding Maui’s top-rated surf school!
Semi private surf lessons are perfect for parties that have between two and six people, age 11 and over. Everyone needs to know how to swim in water that's over head deep.
Our primary surf location, Ukumehame Beach Park, is the perfect spot to learn how to surf, whether you have never touched a surfboard, you’re looking for a refresher lesson, or you just want a fun ocean activity that the whole family can enjoy at the same time! The gentle, yet consistent waves that we get year round, are long enough for you to get comfortable on the board, and really call yourself a surfer!
Maui Surfer Girls’ semi-private surf lessons are ideal for a party with mixed skill-sets. If you have first time surfers mixed with intermediate long boarders, this is the lesson for you! Enjoy Maui’s stunning beaches while developing your surfing skills, confidence, and connection with the ocean in a supportive and uplifting setting. For parties with children ages 5 and up, check out our “How to Book Lessons” page.
Our co-ed classes are open to anyone age 11 and up, that is comfortable swimming in water that’s over head deep.
Surf lessons are two hours long and include a surfboard, rash guard and booties.
Monday - Saturday, 8am and 10:30am, with 1pm classes offered seasonally.
Our lessons take place at scenic Ukumehame Beach Park, just 6 miles past Maalaea / Maui Ocean Center along HWY 30.
Learn from Maui’s best surf instructors, and see why our guests come back to surf with us year after year!
We are now working with Jungle Rootz photography to capture your family surf lesson memories! They come down to the beach for any lesson time slot with more than one person in it, but if you are definitely interested in photos, add the note ‘photos’ to the comment section. They get family portraits, candids during the land lesson, and as many surf action shots as they can get! You can preview the photos on an iPad right at the beach, and they take cash or credit cards. Within 48 hours, (rarely it takes longer, depending on how many people purchase photos) they will email you a link (to the email you booked the reservation with) to download all of your images, which will be active for 30 days.
We at Maui Surfer Girls want to ensure the full safety of our students. Due to the dynamic conditions that may occur when learning to surf we have important safety policies. Being a strong swimmer is not a must but being able to tread water and feel confident in the ocean is important. Our policies state that any student AGES 11 AND UNDER or one that is not a confident swimmer must book a private lesson. A private lesson does not ‘separate’ your child from the rest of the family, but their own instructor will stay with them on the water the entire time. By booking a private lesson, our MSG staff can ensure the safety of our students and therefore students are able to get the most out of their surf lesson.
Children between the ages of 5 and 11 are welcome in private lessons, and children that are 11 or older can be in semi private lessons. Group lessons are open to anyone 13 and older.
Surfing is an activity that requires the ocean and weather to cooperate 100%. If we have to cancel due to weather (no waves, too big waves, brown water, lightning, strong wind, etc), we will try to reschedule your surf lesson to another time. If a reschedule is not possible, it’s a 100% refund.
With a minimum of 48 hours notice via email or phone call, there is a 15% cancellation fee for refunds. No refunds with less than 48 hours notice. Rescheduling is complimentary with more than 48 hours notice, if there is space available. Click on the link in your confirmation email to cancel or change your surf lesson with more than 48 hours notice.
Perfect for any occasion! Purchase in any amount, and have it delivered by email at any time!
Please bring a sturdy swimsuit or board shorts, sunscreen, towel and water. (Reef-Safe NOTE: ONLY zinc/titanium dioxide sunscreens are legal in Maui County) If you have (non-cotton) leggings bring them to the class. Leggings are helpful to prevent the rash from the softop & sunburns on the back of the legs.
Surfboard, long-sleeve rash guard, and booties.
Our Maui surf school is based at a beautiful stretch of coastline called “1000 Peaks” or Ukumehame Beach Park.
If you sign up for a 1 person group lesson, and you end up being the only person in the class, you will be notified by 5pm the day before your lesson, with the option to switch to a group lesson at a different time, or upgrade to a private lesson (for an additional fee).
Yes! We can work with larger groups. Depending on the size and age ranges of your group, you may be split into smaller groups for the lesson. Please email [email protected] to check for availability and group rate pricing.
A minimum of two weeks is preferred for groups of that size, or longer during peak travel times of summer, winter or spring break.
5 years old is our youngest. Please note that 11 and under are required to book a private lesson, and children must be 13 or older to join a group lesson. Our oldest has been 75 (It’s never too late to learn!)
Yes, we do have a swim requirement. You must know how to tread water. Our surf break is fairly far out in the water, so being a strong swimmer and being comfortable in the ocean is extremely helpful.
Smaller children (under 70 pounds) will likely tandem surf with their instructor (riding on the front of their instructors’ board) and they are welcome to wear floaties or a lifejacket for extra buoyancy and warmth.
Yes of course! We suggest a private surf lesson for intermediate surfers so we can spend 1 on 1 time progressing your skills. A majority of our students are 1st timers. Our coaches are still great at coaching to everyone’s individual abilities in a group class. Just note when you register that you have surf experience and prefer a hard top surfboard.
So we can outfit you with the right sized surfboard.
We recommend taking non-drowsy Dramamine or anti-seasick medication. People have gotten seasick on a surfboard, but it’s preventable.
Everyone has their own learning progression with the sport. We do our very best to set you up for success with the right sized gear and personalized coaching. For some students they get up on their first try and others may take a second lesson to get up. We have a great success rate with our students!
Yes, we offer 10% off multiple surf lesson bookings. We can certainly tailor a private surf lesson package for intermediate surfers. Please email [email protected] to set something up.
Please contact us directly for more information.
Max weight limit 200 lbs.
We require that the students are comfortable treading water, but they are welcome to wear a life jacket.
All students with special needs are required to book a private lesson.
For students with physical disabilities, we require two instructors for the rate of $330 plus tax.
NEW: Cancellations and Reschedules can now be completed online, with a link provided in your confirmation email.
No refund if cancelled within 48 hours of surf lesson. 15% cancellation fee on all bookings.
Complimentary reschedules with at least 48 hours notice.
In the event of cancellation due to weather-related issues, including but not limited to high winds, thunderstorms, or no waves, we will reschedule your lesson. In the event that no reschedule is possible, we do refund 100% of the cost.
Our max weight is 300 lbs.
