After years of teaching alongside Steve at Ukumehame, we’re thrilled to share that he is now a valuable part of the MSG ‘ohana! 

Steve Thobe is a lifelong athlete with deep ties to Hawaiʻi and years of ocean experience.

Steve has been Surfing for 44 years and teaching for over 25, with students between the ages of 2 and 82! 

Steve started teaching surfing in Huntington Beach, CA in 1999, after wrapping up his career as a professional baseball player. 

When he is not teaching surfing, he is coaching high school students for both baseball and surfing, and is Dad to two awesome teens! 

As a surf instructor, Steve Thobe blends structured technique with a grounded, calm teaching style — helping students progress while staying relaxed and present in the water.

From first-timers to returning surfers looking to level up, Steve teaches with patience, humor, and a genuine love for passing on surf knowledge.

As with the rest of the Maui Surfer Girls team, Steve’s goal isn’t just to stand up on a wave (though you will!) — it’s to understand the ocean in a deeper way.
